Virginia Lawmaker: Disabled Kids Are God’s Punishment

There are no words to describe the storm that is brewing in my heart right now.

I came across a tweet from a fellow parent of an Autistic child, and I just had to share with you what I am so hurt and upset by:

“The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion with handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the first born of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children,” said Marshall, a Republican.
“In the Old Testament, the first born of every being, animal and man, was dedicated to the Lord. There’s a special punishment Christians would suggest.”

Yes, as a blogger I know that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but when you refer to MY/OUR child(ren) to as “God’s Punishment” that is a whole different ballgame.
No, I have never had an abortion, and I do not judge women who have, but in no way does ANY action condone that statement!!!

Late Monday, his office released a formal apology.

Addressing the story that his office said had “conveyed the impression that I believe disabled children are a punishment for prior abortions,” Marshall explained:”No one who knows me or my record would imagine that I believe or intended to communicate such an offensive notion. I have devoted a generation of work to defending disabled and unwanted children, and have always maintained that they are special blessings to their parents. Nevertheless, I regret any misimpression my poorly chosen words may have created as to my deep commitment to fighting for these vulnerable children and their families.”

Yes, his office apologized for this, as a mother, your apology is just a way to mop your mess up, 99% of speeches are pre-written which gives me the impression that you knew what you were going to say, and decided to say it regardless of who it hurt.  The apology is not accepted on my behalf and it’s just a political clean-up move.  Though I am just one woman, I know my rage means nothing to him and or his staff, but in my own little blogworld, I made a HUGE difference by speaking on behalf of my BEAUTIFUL GIFT FROM GOD and the rest of our Family.

I apologize for this, but I HAD to vent.

I believe that ALL children are a Gift from God, and those children who have challenges make us smile just as much if not MORE than the “average” child.

  1. ARRRGGGHHH. As you say, apology not accepted you a$$wipe politician. That really, really makes my blood boil. Any of those words are contemptuous, whether they were construed out of context or not.

  2. I don’t accept the apology either. How in the heck does he expect us to fall for that he didn’t mean what he said. There was no other way to take it!

  3. Sometimes when they say these things it makes me wonder if they even live on the same planet as the rest of us. It got him a lot of attention, which may be exactly what he was looking for. I often wonder why Republicans who ultra conservative, have no problem spewing such hatred, in the name of religion. It truly fascinates, and angers me.

  4. politician will say anything to get their point across… in this case not only it hurt people but also kill the whole point. It is sad that one would hide behind the christian faith to unheartedly hurt people which tells me that they are far from knowing God’s word. the disciple had ask Jesus is this disabled man sick because of his sin? Jesus answered its not that him or his parents had sin its for God glory. Like you said Children disabled or not are God’s gift and they are as much valuable as any other children. I’m pro-life and believe in the cause against abortion but these politician urhg!!!! before they speak for God they need to actually know the word of God. God is love!

  5. this is what u expect from a person in a high position, who are supposed to care, im disgusted and u are quite right to be annoyed grr 🙂

  6. Good for you for speaking out about such insanity. I agree, it’s a bunch of crap. Even if it wasn’t pre-written, he spoke from the heart (which is rather scary, frankly). It’s BS that he is trying to take it back now.

  7. I live in va and when I saw this I was very upset! I know several kids with disabilities, and I have a cousin with Muscular Dystrophy! Even though I am pro-life The Delegate who said that made me so angry! Kids with disabilities are not punishment they are a Gift, a great gift!
